Stakeholder group A

Logo - Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft

Who are we:

The BMEL's central goals are food safety, the promotion of healthy diets, the creation of favourable conditions for the agricultural, forestry and fishing sectors, and the strengthening of the consumer's market position in commercial transactions. These objectives are pursued by over 900 staff members with a huge range of different specialisms in Bonn and Berlin, along with colleagues at subordinate institutions within the field of activity.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

A more sustainable structuring of the cocoa sector along the entire production chain should not be an end in itself but should make a real contribution towards improving the living and working conditions of cocoa producers. This includes the conservation of natural resources and the long-term safeguarding of income via the use of good technical practices.

The BMEL represents German interests in the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO). Within this framework, it also works to ensure that the needs of producer countries are accommodated, because only in collaboration with them can sustainability in the cocoa sector be achieved. Beyond this, the BMEL is also involved in the CEN's work on establishing a European standard for sustainable and traceable cocoa. It is among the co-initiators of GISCO.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

The complex situation in the cocoa sector makes it necessary for all the parties involved to take a united approach. As one of the biggest cocoa processors worldwide, Germany has a particular responsibility here. This is why the BMEL supports GISCO 's multi-stakeholder approach and in particular the close collaboration with the producer countries.

Who are we:

The BMZ develops the guidelines and concepts of German development policy, which it understands as global structural and peace policy. The aim of development policy is to combat poverty - to improve the living conditions of people in developing and emerging countries. Poverty is widespread in the cocoa sector, which is primarily characterised by small-scale farming. BMZ is counteracting this through numerous activities. You can find more information at www.bmz.de.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

Cocoa farmers have access to technical advice, inputs and financial services and can shape their lives in a self-determined manner. They earn a fair income that secures their livelihood and can send their children to school. They use cultivation methods that conserve natural resources, especially soil and forest.

Why we are a member of GISCO:

The challenges and ills of the cocoa sector cannot be solved alone. That is why we believe that cooperation, networking and coordination between the relevant actors from business, politics and civil society is the right way forward.

Stakeholder group B

Logo - Ritter Sport

Who are we?

With an aided brand awareness level of 99 per cent, almost every German knows the Ritter Sport brand. Around one in four of all 100-gram bars sold in Germany is a square bar from Ritter Sport and is therefore made by Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co.KG from the Swabian town of Waldenbuch. Founded in 1912, the family business is now run by Alfred T. Ritter, a member of the third generation to run the business. Responsibility towards people and the environment has always been among the fundamental principles of the medium-sized family-run business, which keeps a constant eye on the well-being of future generations in everything it does. Find out more at www.ritter-sport.de.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

The sustainable cultivation of cocoa has been at the heart of our commitment for many years. The aim is to improve the living conditions of people in the growing regions and protect the environment, especially the rainforest. We believe that the industrialised nations have a specific responsibility towards the producing countries; this especially applies to us as a producer of chocolate.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

Compared to many of our competitors, as a medium-sized family-run business, we cannot tackle a global subject such as the social and ecological conditions associated with cocoa cultivation on our own. That is why we welcome the collaborative partnership of all those involved in GISCO and are dedicated to working together to develop effective programmes which will safeguard the environment and improve the living conditions of the people in the growing regions on a lasting basis.

Who are we:

August Storck KG is a family business that manufactures renowned brands such as Werther’s Original, merci, Toffifee, nimm2, Riesen, Dickmann’s, and Knoppers at three German production sites. The success of the company, which has been run by its owners since 1903, is substantially based on the orientation towards the principles of responsibility, quality, reliability, and co-operation. August Storck KG is a certified enterprise according to the international Social Standard 8000 (SA8000). Learn more about us on www.storck.com.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

Acting sustainably means shaping the economic, ecological, and social conditions of cocoa cultivation, trade, and processing in such a way that all parties at each level are guaranteed a basis for gainful employment and hence adequate living conditions that is both long term and protective of natural resources.

Cocoa is a commodity that essentially provides a living for people in cocoa growing regions; for the buyers, it is an indispensable raw material. A joint commitment of all parties involved in the supply chain and in politics is necessary to fundamentally change the living and working conditions of the farmers in order to provide them with positive future prospects and to also secure the required resources for companies.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

The co-operation of all parties involved in the cocoa industry offers the opportunity to pool knowledge and scope of influence. For Storck, as a medium-sized enterprise that is not present in the West African producing countries, membership in GISCO is a way of positively expanding our influence in these producing countries. We hope that with the cross-sector interaction of cocoa farmers, traders, and processing industries, we can achieve a good basis to improve the living and working conditions of the farmers in the producing countries, to prevent malpractices such as exploitative child labour, and to develop a sustainable future in the cocoa growing regions.

Logo - Barry Callebaut AG

Who are we:

Zurich-based Barry Callebaut is the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality cocoa and chocolate – from the cocoa bean to the finest chocolate product. Barry Callebaut operates out of 30 countries, runs more than 45 production facilities and employs a diverse and dedicated workforce of about 6,000 people. Through its Cocoa Horizons initiative and research activities, the company engages with farmers, farmer organizations and other partners to help ensure future supplies of cocoa and improve farmer livelihoods.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

By 2020, the industry will need one million tons of chocolate additionally. That means: The need in cocoa, especially in certified cocoa, will rise considerably. To meet the future demand, we take action today – by ensuring effective and sustainable cocoa growing.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

We have a tremendous opportunity to promote change for a better future. But we cannot do it alone. True leadership requires a long-term view, a culture of innovation, and close partnership with many stakeholders.

Logo - Baumgartner Schokoladen GmbH

Who are we:

Baumgartner Schokoladen GmbH is a family enterprise founded in 1987 in Irschenberg, Upper Bavaria. We are a manufacturer of innovative chocolate, cookie and nut specialities for the food processing industry. True to our slogan "the crunchy side of chocolate", our individual creations can be found in a wide variety of products related to yogurts, ice cream, muesli and decor. We attach huge importance to social responsibility, sustainable action and protection of our environment.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

As a family business, it is our concern to critically scrutinize the entire supply chain so as not to overlook those without whose efforts our products would simply be impossible from the beginning: The workers at the cocoa plantations, who have to do their work partially under difficult conditions without fair pay. In addition to improving living conditions, there must also be a focus on environmental protection so that not only the natural resource of cocoa but also the forests are preserved for future generations.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

As an individual company, we have realized that despite best intentions, it is difficult to make a difference in a way that will have a lasting impact on the provenience. So, we decided to join the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa in order to be able to implement projects in a community of like-minded companies in a meaningful way. Only together we can promote and advance sustainable cocoa cultivation targeted.

Logo - BDSI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Süßwarenindustrie e.V.

Who are we:

The BDSI represents the economic interests of predominantly medium-sized companies in the German confectionery industry. It is both a trade association and an employers’ association. It has over 90 members from the cocoa and chocolate industry. Germany alone processes 10% of the world’s cocoa.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

The German confectionery industry feels a sense of responsibility for the entire cocoa value chain. The main focus is on the well-being of all growers, the cocoa farmers. The Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI) has hence set itself the target of improving conditions for cocoa growers in the producing countries by promoting sustainable cocoa production in close cooperation with local societal forces. Our commitment can only be successful if all stakeholders in the cocoa value chain are involved in this initiative and lend it their support and active cooperation.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

To achieve these goals while taking into consideration the special circumstances in the cocoa sector requires the concerted action of all stakeholders in the cocoa supply chain. It is crucial that GISCO offers the possibility for all companies to engage in the cocoa sector.

Logo - Brandt Zwieback-Schokoladen GmbH + Co. KG

Who are we:

The family business Brandt is one of the most well-known brands in Germany. Since more than 100 years the brand has become a synonym for the rusk category. Ever since, the products around the Brandt Markenzwieback stand for trust, tradition and quality. Our subsidiary Burger has, as Number 2 in Germany, also achieved a significant market position in the segment of crisp bread. Brandt is also active as a medium-sized B2B producer of chocolate, which is for the consumer invisible. The basis of all three business areas is our entrepreneurial way of thinking and acting, every activity has to adapt to the economical, ecological and social aspects.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

For the family business Brandt sustainability has a high relevance. Thus Brandt is involved in the Centre for sustainable management of the private University Witten-Herdecke, since years. Due to this first close cooperation, even as a middle-sized company, we have recognized that we have to take joint responsibility for one of our important raw material, the cocoa. Therefore we want to support everything what stands for a fair value added chain of cocoa.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

As a middle-sized family business we want to contribute to the sustainability in cocoa growing. Small companies are successful in this contribution when they affiliate with likeminded and give with united power their aims the united voice. Our strength is the common target in GISCO.

Logo - Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Sprüngli GmbH

Who are we:

LINDT stands for premium quality with tradition: It all started in a small pastry shop in Zurich’s old town in 1845, where “David Sprüngli & fils“developed chocolate in a solid form for the first time. Rodolphe Lindt developed the famous “conching-process” in 1879, which revolutionized the chocolate world entirely. During the last 165 years, an international group of companies with over 8100 employees worldwide evolved. In Aachen, Germany, constant innovations by employees from more than 60 nations contribute to the conditions for long-term and sustainable growth of Lindt & Sprüngli.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

As premium chocolate producer, Lindt & Sprüngli has complete control over every step of its production, from the careful selection of the finest cacao beans to the finished product, which enables highest quality standards. Considering sustainability aspects is an integrated part of how we operate. The base of our efforts in cocoa sustainability is traceability up to the source of the beans, as this enables us to implement targeted actions, which foster sustainability in the cocoa sector.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

Some challenges in the cocoa sector cannot be resolved by a company alone. We need the cooperation with other companies, governmental and non-governmental organizations. The German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa is a perfect platform to develop collaborative solutions and initiate innovative projects.

Logo - Chocoversum GmbH

Who are we:
At the CHOCOVERSUM, those with a sweet tooth can experience first-hand how bitter beans are turned into sweet gold. The world of experience welcomes around 200,000 visitors a year in Hamburg's old town. In total, more than 1 million guests have already experienced Hamburg's chocolate side. In a 90-minute guided tour, they accompany the cocoa on its exciting journey from cultivation through all the production stages to the chocolate bar. The creative staging of the individual exhibition areas immerses visitors intensively in themed worlds. They find themselves in the rainforest, in the harbour or in the chocolate factory. The heart of the exhibition is the chocolate workshop, where each visitor creates their own bar of chocolate - and thus takes home their very own happiness to go at the end.

The adjoining CHOCOVERSUM shop is open seven days a week, including Sundays and public holidays, and can be visited independently of the museum. To keep the quality in the shop high at all times, the suppliers are selected very carefully. In addition to big quality brands, there are also local products from Hamburg's Confiserie Paulsen, for example, or innovative products from Lakrids, Coco Chocolatier or Tony Chocolonely. The assortment ranges from confectionery pralinés and Danish spiced chocolates to real rarities such as cocoa pesto, chocolate beer or barbecue sauces containing cocoa.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
At the CHOCOVERSUM, we offer our guests a pleasure journey that stretches from the cocoa fruit to the finished chocolate bar. It is in our interest to raise awareness that cocoa is a valuable and special raw material. Working conditions, child labour, cocoa prices as well as the generally complex cultivation and further processing of the raw material are topics of the chocolate tour and are conveyed with different emphases by our chocolate guides.
The CHOCOVERSUM is also a member of GISCO, which has set itself the goal of improving the living conditions of cocoa farmers and their families, preserving natural resources and biodiversity in the growing countries, and increasing the cultivation and marketing of sustainably produced cocoa.

In the CHOCOVERSUM shop, we sell a comprehensive selection of sustainably and fairly traded products and are happy to present various socially responsible brands:
- Original Beans is dedicated to the protection and preservation of rare cocoa varieties and cooperates closely with cocoa farmers in the respective growing regions. The organic cocoa sourced from direct trade grows either wild in the rainforest or semi-wild as a mixed crop, but never in plantations. They distribute their chocolates plastic-free and CO2-negative.
- Tony's Chocolonely campaigns for slave-free chocolate and educates about the unfair (profit) distribution in the cocoa trade.
- The "Wild Amazon" chocolate was created on the initiative of the Rainforest Institute and contains only wild cocoa.
- The brand "Hopery" is characterised by vegan, palm oil and animal-free cosmetics.

Why we are a member of GISCO:
We would like to network with experts on the complex content of sustainability in the cocoa sector and use the industry exchange to ensure the best possible knowledge transfer on the topic for our guests. The topic is very close to the hearts of all our chocolate-loving colleagues, which we would like to underline through our membership of GISCO. Our aim is to fulfil our social responsibility and to play an active role in shaping the cocoa sector. This is all the more important to us because we welcome many families and school classes and want to fulfil our educational mission as a museum in the best possible way.

Logo - COOKO

Who we are:
Cooko is an agricultural services start-up. Our focus on providing 1st mile traceability to the cocoa sector aims to radically change the livelihoods of farmers, the trading practices of confectioners and the buying habits of consumers. 1st mile traceability is the key to understanding and incentivising a new data driven approach to farming and farming policy.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
We believe that the Cocoa industry can be a major force for good. The Theobroma tree in its curious way teaches us to respect agro-forestry practices, to consider impacts at a human scale and to design systems that nourish communities AND the land.

The communities that rely on Cocoa for their livelihood have the ability to build better futures for their children and a healthier eco-system for all children. We MUST adress some of the social and economic impact which have marked the expansion of global trade. Sustainable cocoa, when implemented in a considered, integrated and regenerative way, can feed the minds and bodies of generations to come.

Why we are a member of GISCO:
In Africa there is a saying: A single finger cannot raise a grain of rice. The implication is that change can only come from collaboration and partnerships. The challenges we face in promoting sustainable cocoa have deep, systemic roots. The only way to address and solve these issues is to develop strong multi-stakeholder alliances. GISCO membership and active participation in the various working groups (particularly on traceability and livelihoods) are therefore essential to achieving our stated business objective.

Who are we:
H.D. Cotterell has been a family-run quartermaster specialising in the receipt and storage of cocoa beans and semi-finished cocoa products in the port of Hamburg for over 130 years. As a quartermaster, one of our tasks is to store, control, care for and protect the products. We manage about 100,000 square metres with about 60 employees. As a company and employer, H.D. Cotterell feels a special responsibility to preserve the environment for future generations and to promote a change in thinking towards more sustainability. H.D. Cotterell therefore applies new, more sustainable technologies and participates in sustainable projects. Since 2018, we have had an annual carbon footprint report prepared to make our environmental footprint measurable and our improvements visible. H. D. Cotterell has been a carbon neutral company since 2021.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
Sustainably certified products - such as BIO, UTZ or Rainforest - have become increasingly important on the market in the past and no longer have a niche existence.  Nevertheless, we notice that the demand for sustainable products among our customers has been stagnating for about five years and that an expansion of the share of sustainable cocoa in the cocoa industry is not in focus. In our opinion, the future of cocoa lies in the shift towards sustainable cocoa and away from conventional cocoa. We need to be more consistent in setting targets in the cocoa sector.  We are happy to walk this new path with our customers and want to support them in doing so.
H.D. Cotterell, for example, is certified for the storage of organically grown products and we support our customers with our experience. Furthermore, we promote this development by offering more environmentally friendly services. Our fleet is composed of 75% electrically powered vehicles; we aim to reach 100% in the medium term. We use electricity from our own climate-neutral photovoltaic system and for the electricity demand that cannot be covered by the photovoltaic system, we purchase 100% green electricity.
For some years now, we have been part of the logistical chain of a project in which organic cocoa is transported from its origin to the processing plant in a climate-neutral way. This exciting collaboration has also encouraged us to continue on the sustainable path. In addition, we support a protection forest project in which the forest area is protected from cultivation and clearing for 50 years.

Why are we a member of GISCO:
As a service company based in the port of Hamburg, we have no direct influence on the conditions in the countries of origin of the cocoa. We are a member of GISCO in order to bring about an improvement in social conditions in the countries of origin and to prevent the use of abusive child labour. We see that a change in the cocoa sector must take place in the future, i.e. all logistical processes from the cultivation to the processing of the cocoa should be carried out transparently under social and environmentally friendly aspects.

To maintain our high quality standards in the long term, sustainable production of all raw materials is important to us. We are committed to clean and sustainable cultivation of raw materials. In our supplier relationships, our responsibility goes beyond granting fair prices: we demand that generally applicable social standards are observed or improved where they have not yet reached a desirable level. We reject child labor and the oppression and exploitation of children.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

The issues in question are not exclusive topics for our company, but a fundamental challenge. To help us meet the above objectives, we have decided to become a member of GISCO.

Our goal is to shift all production to exclusively use certified cocoa by the end of this decade. We are investing millions to achieve this goal.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

The deficits in the cocoa cultivation are complex and they can only be collectively tackled through cooperative action by politics, industry, trade and NGOs. KG produce chocolates for every taste with around 350 employees in our factory in Herford, East Westphalia.  We work together with customers from 50 countries worldwide, fulfilling customer wishes in the areas of conventional, organic and fair trade.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

"The cocoa fruit is a treasure of nature and growing it requires commitment and know-how. To convey this recognition is our concern, which is why we have completely converted our production to sustainable cocoa (UTZ, Fairtrade and/or organic) since January 2014. We want to develop more direct relationships with producers and strengthen dialogue to meet our mutual needs and to source cocoa in the most socially and environmentally friendly way possible".

What we do for sustainability in the cocoa sector:

Since January 2014 we have been sourcing 100% sustainably certified cocoa, i.e. UTZ, Fairtrade and/or organic. We have maintained close relations with a Fairtrade cooperative in Ghana since 1996, which includes mutual visits and support of local activities. We are in the process of establishing closer cooperations with other cocoa producers as well, so that we can assume greater responsibility for social and ecological conditions in the cocoa-growing countries. Since August 2017, we have had a Sustainability Officer specifically dedicated to this area.

Why we are a member of the Sustainable Cocoa Forum:

In order to promote truly sustainable cocoa farming, i.e. to guarantee human rights and environmental protection in the cocoa trading system, representatives of business enterprises, political institutions and civil society must do their best. Networking and exchange among the various actors enable mutual support and the bundling of forces to move closer to this Goal.

From its five principles of quality, responsibility, reciprocity, efficiency and freedom Mars derives not only its corporate culture and its dealings with customers and business partners. Its resolute commitment to the environment and society also stems from these principles. As an employee-oriented company, Mars has occupied a top position in "Germany's Best Employers" for years and was awarded second place for the third time in February 2020.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

For more than 40 years, Mars has been committed to fair and sustainable cocoa. With its sustainability strategy "Cocoa for Generations" launched in 2018, Mars aims to drive the transformation of the cocoa supply chain and builds on its previous experiences. Working with its suppliers, Mars aims to achieve a cocoa supply chain free of deforestation, promote respect for human rights, and ensure that farmers are fairly compensated for the cocoa they grow. Over ten years (2018 - 2028), Mars is investing $1 billion to implement the strategy.

By 2025, Mars aims to ensure that 100% of its cocoa is responsibly sourced and traceable. In the long term, the aim is to make the cocoa supply chain sustainable. Mars therefore supports the regulation of corporate due diligence in global supply chains. Going forward, Mars counts on an EU-wide approach to benefit all actors in the supply chain in addressing human rights & environmental challenges.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

Mars has been active as a founding member within GISCO since 2012, as the family-owned company is convinced that collaboration is the best strategy for greater sustainability in cocoa farming. By networking, Mars wants to join forces and send a clear signal to promote sustainable cocoa farming.

Logo - Mondelez

Who are we?
Mondelez International is a leading global manufacturer of chocolate, biscuits, chewing gum, candy, coffee and powdered drinks. Our range includes well-known chocolate brands such as Milka, Toblerone and Cadbury. As a globally popular snacking company, we are committed to a sustainable business philosophy. "Protecting our Earth" is one of our five core strategies. We follow this claim along our entire value chain: from the cultivation of the cocoa bean to the finished bar of chocolate.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
We are aware that the cocoa sector is characterised by major social challenges. As one of the world's largest buyers of raw materials, we therefore actively take responsibility in the growing countries. With "Cocoa Life", our corporate programme for a sustainable cocoa supply chain, we not only want to invest in agricultural productivity, but also promote cocoa communities holistically. So that they become places where people enjoy living well and cocoa farming once again becomes an attractive occupational field for future generations - for us, these are the central aspects for more sustainability in the cocoa sector.

Why we are a member of GISCO:
Our partnerships on the ground in the growing countries are for us the most important link on the way to a more sustainable supply chain in the cocoa sector. They give us the opportunity to share expertise, extend the reach of our actions and actually drive change processes. Supporting cocoa farmers in the growing countries and promoting sustainable cultivation - with this aim, we are also a member of GISCO. Here we exchange experiences and develop best practice measures for the cocoa sector with other GISCO members. In addition to ecological and economic aspects, the focus for us is above all on social aspects: Better living conditions for cocoa farmers and their families.

Logo - Nestle

Who are we:

Nestlé is the world's leading nutrition, health and wellness company. Our mission of "Good Food, Good Life" is to provide consumers with the best tasting, most nutritious choices in a wide range of food and beverage categories in order to sustain and improve quality of life. A company can only be successful in the long-term if it is capable of generating additional value for the society. This concept of “creating shared value” determines our actions along our value chains.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

In our work, we pursue a holistic approach, which integrates quality requirements as well as environmental and social standards. For our products we require high quality cocoa that has to be cultivated under responsible conditions– and provides it’s growers a proper livelihood. Currently the cultivation of cocoa does not fulfill these obligations in important producing regions. Sustainability in the cocoa sector requires transparent supply-chains, the strict implementation of social and safety standards and not least the professionalization and strengthening of the cocoa cultivation. The Nestlé Cocoa Plan combines these pillars, based on strong partnerships and a long-term commitment to sustainably grown cocoa.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

Sustainability in the cultivation of cocoa requires commitment in the own supply chains, but it can only be achieved if all forces of society and supply chain partners join forces. For this purpose GISCO serves as an important platform in order to bundle these forces and strengthen the commitment. In Germany the whole cocoa for our brands KIT KAT and SMARTIES already comes from partner-cooperatives of the Cocoa Plan as well as further certified cooperatives. It is our goal to cover our whole cocoa demand from sustainable cultivation until 2015.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

We help customers to respond to the growing appetite for food that is natural, healthy and sustainable. We can’t do that without creating a professionalised cocoa supply chain, where farmers earn a living income, child labor is eliminated, and the natural world is protected.

Our sustainability ambition, Cocoa Compass, sets challenging goals for our directly sourced supply chain, which include helping 150,000 farmers to achieve a living income, eliminating child labor and creating a net increase in tree carbon stock by 2030.

In 2020, we hit our targets of 100% traceability and 100% deforestation monitoring in our direct supply chain, and child labor monitoring in all our managed sustainability programs. Having this data and insight at our fingertips will help us identify how and where to act to achieve our longer-term ambition of a professionalized and quality-focused cocoa supply chain.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

Achieving impact at scale will require partnerships across our industry. The forum allows us to share knowledge and best practice with others who are working to make cocoa more sustainable, as well as work together to find new solutions to create a more positive future for cocoa Farmers.

Piasten - Treets

Piasten GmbH / Treets GmbH

Who we are:

Piasten GmbH, based in Forchheim is Germany's largest dragée manufacturer and one of the leading manufacturers of pralines, sweets and chocolate. Piasten attaches particular importance to a sustainable supply chain that respects people and the environment. The company uses 65% sustainable cocoa in the manufacture of its products and the proportion continues to rise steadily.

Treets GmbH, founded in 2017, is a confectionery company based in Forchheim, Germany, and belongs to the Piasten GmbH. With the brand Treets - THE PEANUT COMPANY the company has created a brand around the home of the American peanut, which carries the brand slogan "God made the peanut, but He forgot the chocolate". Treets places great emphasis on sustainability and exclusively uses 100% Fairtrade-certified cocoa for the production of all their products.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

Sustainability in the cocoa sector means for us a satisfactory fulfilment of the three sustainability dimensions for all actors involved, in particular for the living conditions of today's cocoa farmers as well as for future generations. But also the ecological effects of cocoa cultivation in the producing countries themselves must not be allowed to fade into the background and are essential for the long-term securing of the raw material and the protection of local ecosystems. Ultimately, sustainable chocolate must also be economically viable for farmers, suppliers, manufacturers and traders in the long term. Furthermore today's consumer zeitgeist also requires the fulfilment of holistic sustainability.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

Actual sustainability in the cocoa sector cannot be achieved through the use of certified cocoa alone. Rather, the various actors from manufacturers, traders, politicians, associations, NGOs and local cooperatives must join forces to define and implement long-term strategic steps. We are convinced that the GISCO provides the right platform for this dialogue and hope that together we can achieve even more.

Who are we:

The family business Rübezahl Schokoladen GmbH, founded in 1949, based in Dettingen / Teck near Stuttgart with the brands Sun Rice, Gubor, Friedel, and Weseke Dragees and as a manufacturer of brand and private label products, belongs to the leading confectionery manufacturers in the industry. As a provider of quality chocolate as well as fondant and jelly products, Rübezahl Schokoladen GmbH exports its products to more than 50 countries worldwide. Rübezahl produces more than 100 million hollow body figures and 30 million Advent calendars annually at three locations in Germany, among others.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

We are aware of our social responsibility. In order to promote sustainability in the cocoa sector, our company has been using more sustainably produced cocoa from one year to the next. It is likely that the demand for raw material cocoa will continue to rise in the future. Thus, the growing conditions have to be improved in the producing countries, and the cocoa farmers have to be trained. This way, they can gain higher yields and better earning potential and cocoa farming can remain a satisfactory career field for following generations.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

As a medium-sized company, we do not have the resources and influence to solve the challenges in the cocoa industry alone. Therefore, we rely on the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa as a multiplier to combine forces - together with other SMEs - on a long term basis to achieve steady improvements in the living conditions of cocoa farmers and their cocoa farming methods through buying sustainable cocoa. Because only together we are strong.

Who we are:

Established in 1923, SCHOKINAG has been manufacturing chocolates since 100 years and is now recognized as one of the key manufacturers of industrial chocolates in Europe. Our investment decisions are driven by long-term benefits to our company, our employees and the environment.

Our chocolates are perfect for a variety of applications, such as for enrobing, tablets, dipping, bakery inclusions and hollow moldings. Our strength is our flexibility. In addition to our standard range of chocolates we also develop recipes to our customers' precise specifications. SCHOKINAG - a name standing for highest product quality, good value for money and excellence in customer service.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

For SCHOKINAG, sustainability in the cocoa sector means successfully conducting our business, while at the same time contributing to the economic growth of developing countries and ensuring careful management of the environment and resources.

Corporate social and ecological responsibility at the core of our actions: the well-being of the communities living and working in the cocoa growing regions is irrevocable for SCHOKINAG. For this reason, we maintain strict environmental and social standards within our operations. From our suppliers we expect and require the strictest awareness as well. They engage on our behalf in various sustainability programmes with the aim of (among other things) fighting against child labour and for fair labour standards and good agricultural practices. Consistently with this approach, SCHOKINAG provides Fairtrade (Mass Balance), UTZ (Mass Balance) and Rainforest Alliance (Segregated) certified chocolates.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

Due to the medium-sized structure of our company, it is particularly important and necessary for SCHOKINAG to exchange views and ideas on the topic of sustainability with other actors in the cocoa value chain. Our continuous commitment to responsible and sustainable business has led us to GISCO.

Logo - Schöki

Who are we?
SCHÖKI campaigns for livelihood-securing raw material prices and scientifically sound sustainability standards in the chocolate industry. We pursue the goal of making fair, sustainable and transparent supply chains the standard in the chocolate industry. Together with strong partners, we have launched the SusChain Initiative. With SusChain, we are developing a open source software, which enables us and other interested companies to record and present supply chains transparently. Based on scientific findings, we work together to determine living prices for raw materials and specific sustainability standards, derive necessary interventions from this and implement them in our supply chain using examples. Together, we are developing the "new normal" of tomorrow. The SusChain Initiative is still at the beginning of an interesting journey. If you are interested, we would be happy to hear from other participants.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
Especially in the cocoa sector, sustainability and living cocoa prices remain the exception. For real fairness and sustainability, a rethink is necessary on many levels.  Every company should take responsibility for its entire supply chain and ensure that living cocoa prices are paid so that cocoa producers can lead a self-determined life away from poverty. Furthermore, companies should ensure that their cocoa is produced in an environmentally sound manner. The use of pesticides, monocultures and the deforestation of rainforests must be stopped. Through organic farming and fair cocoa prices, cocoa can move from being a problem to being part of the solution in many regions. You can find more information about our vision here.

Why are we a member of GISCO:
We are a member of GISCO because we are convinced that the desired changes in the cocoa sector are best achieved within strong networks. Many of SCHÖKI's core values are also reflected in the formulated individual goals of GISCO We hope to always get a good overview of how other companies and organisations are addressing the common goals, to establish new partnerships and to critically question our own approaches in exchange.

It also supports research projects that deal with raw cocoa as well as projects in the areas of education and outreach.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
Sustainability in the cocoa sector is already anchored in the Foundation's goals. One of the Foundation's goals is to promote education and information for young people and adults, particularly in the areas of nutrition and health, especially in cocoa-growing countries. In doing so, the foundation also works together with other partners who pursue similar objectives.

What we do for sustainability in the cocoa sector:
The Foundation has already promoted sustainability in the cocoa sector in several projects: for example, the establishment of a functioning cooperative in Côte d'Ivoire in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the strengthening of farmers' professional skills with the Hanns Neumann Foundation and GISCOs PRO-PLANTEURS project.

Why are we a member of GISCO
The Foundation believes that a collaborative effort to promote sustainable cocoa farming can only succeed if all stakeholders in the cocoa value chain, without exception, are involved, supportive and actively engaged in this endeavour.

Who are we:
Founded in 1911, the Verein der am Rohkakaohandel beteiligten Firmen e. V. (The German Cocoa Trade Association) has set itself the task of promoting the common interests of the trade in raw cocoa and cocoa semi-finished products. We currently have 28 member companies: Cocoa trading companies, cocoa processors and brokers as well as companies connected with the cocoa trade through storage, banking, insurance, transport, appraisal and other services. The German Cocoa Trade Association represents the interests of its member companies at regional, national and international level, in particular vis-à-vis the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the International Cocoa Organization and in contract matters vis-à-vis the Federation of Cocoa Commerce, London. The association is committed to the principle of free trade.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
The promotion of sustainable cultivation in socio-economic and ecological terms means improving the living conditions of farmers and their families while at the same time preserving limited natural resources. Only in this context can a supply of high-quality cocoa be ensured. On this longer-term path, significant successes can only be achieved with the involvement of all actors in the supply chain, with the producers and their organisations at the centre, but above all only with an active and constructive role of the state institutions in the producer and consumer countries. Based on this understanding, our association has also been involved in the multi-year process of developing the CEN/ISO standard "Sustainable and Traceable Cocoa".

Why we are a member of GISCO:
Given the scale and complexity of the challenges of a cocoa economy that is sustainable in economic, business, environmental and political terms, a multi-stakeholder process is not only the right approach, it is the very imperative approach to address the multi-dimensional requirements. We support GISCO's approach of improving the conditions of cocoa producers through project-based promotion of sustainable cocoa cultivation in close cooperation with local social forces. Furthermore, we see the forum as a valuable instrument for bringing together stakeholders from different sectors with different perspectives in order to achieve a better understanding of the complex challenges through dialogue and thus improve the conditions for developing practical further steps.

As the representative of the "100% fair" stakeholders in Germany and a member of the World Fair Trade Organization, which unites fair trade companies globally, Forum Fairer Handel is particularly committed to this approach within fair trade.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
A sustainable cocoa sector ensures a decent life for all stakeholders along the entire supply chain and conserves natural resources. In order to make the cocoa sector sustainable, the income situation of farmers in the cocoa sector must be improved, as many grievances originate in their poverty.
The responsibility for generating living incomes and living wages for all workers in the cocoa sector must be shared along the supply chain and must not be shifted onto the farmers. This requires better political framework conditions and a change in business practices. Social and ecological standards, fair purchase prices and fair trading conditions, as well as compliance with human rights due diligence obligations must become the standard.

Why are we a member of GISCO:
Real change in the cocoa sector requires the cooperation of all actors along the value chain. A multi-actor partnership such as GISCO offers the opportunities to advance a sustainable cocoa sector across the different actor groups, provided there is a genuine willingness for dialogue and change among all. Forum Fairer Handel, a member of GISCO since 2018, as a civil society actor, brings in particular the perspective of Fair Trade and shows by the example of its own member companies: sustainable business, the payment of fair prices, as well as fair and partnership-based trade relations are possible!

Who are we?

The German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) based in Hamburg is the biggest research institute for (comparative) area studies in Germany. It combines research on political, economic and social developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East with global and inter-regional topics. A key thematic focus are socio-economic challenges in the context of globalization. Within this framework, the researchers concentrate on the interdependencies between economic development and environmental sustainability. More information is available at www.giga-hamburg.de.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

Economic growth is a necessary prerequisite for reducing poverty in developing countries but at the same time puts pressure on natural resources and the environment. That is why we examine possible trade-offs as well as conceivable synergies between environmentally and socially sustainable developments. For our research in the field of cocoa this means to understand and analyze the environmental and socio-economic dimensions of cocoa production. This may allow us  to manage trade-offs and identify possible win-win situations.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

We would like to share our findings with actors from the economy, politics and civil society, thereby taking important research results into the public sphere. At the same time, being a member of GISCO gives us key insights into current debates, difficulties and activities which we can cover and integrate into our research. We wish to use the thusly acquired findings regarding trade-offs and synergies between social and environmental sustainability to actively contribute to a more sustainable cocoa cultivation.

Logo - Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik

Who are we?

The Hamburg Foundation for Business Ethics is a non-profit organization that deals with topics related to the area of business ethics in global supply chains. We are focusing on the analysis and assessment of ethical risks in specific economic sectors. Together with other relevant players we work on projects to minimize these risks and develop strategies which are also transferable to other sectors.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

Sustainability is an important issue within all economic sectors; nonetheless, cocoa plays a particular role in comparison to other sectors because the current unsustainable cultivation and trading practices could lead to an exhausted sector in the foreseeable future if no solution is found. To ensure the sector’s continuing existence, but even more importantly, to improve the farmer’s living and working conditions, a combination between social, ecological and economic changes is essential.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

The motivation for our membership is an improvement of the farmers’ living conditions. This can only be achieved by means of participation of all the players in the supply chain, which is why we would like to support GISCO’s work and contribute to this dialogue with our sector-transcending perspective.

Who are we?
Fighting poverty, defeating hunger, shaping globalisation justly: With these goals, INKOTA has been committed to a fairer world for over 40 years. INKOTA is a development policy network. Throughout Germany, our supporters include more than 7,500 people as well as numerous church congregations, worldshops and development policy groups. With targeted campaigns and high-profile activities, we raise awareness of the global challenges of the present. In doing so, we work closely with partner organisations in the so-called developing countries. INKOTA has been coordinating the European campaign "Make Chocolate Fair" since 2013. With this campaign, we work together with consumers for more justice and sustainability in the cocoa sector.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?
A sustainable cocoa sector ensures a decent life for all stakeholders along the entire value chain. For this, a fundamental improvement in the income situation of cocoa farmers is urgently needed. Furthermore, cocoa farming goes hand in hand with a responsibility for environmental and climate protection. In cocoa cultivation, the preservation of natural resources and the ecological balance must be taken into account so that future generations do not have to suffer the consequences. Sustainability in the cocoa sector can only be achieved through political and corporate rethinking. In the future, the vital interests of all people must count more than the economic interests of individual actors. Social and ecological standards in cocoa cultivation as well as fair trade practices must become central components of corporate practice.

Why are we a member of GISCO?
It is important to us to engage in a constructive, critical dialogue with key stakeholders in the cocoa and chocolate sector to exchange ideas on effective measures to improve the situation in cocoa growing countries. As a civil society actor, we want to advocate for the interests of cocoa farmers in the Forum. In doing so, our concern is to strengthen the already existing commitment of companies: The anchoring of high social and ecological standards as well as fair trading conditions must be advanced in corporate practices. In particular, we want to continue the debate on a fair price with companies. Our long-term goal is for the share of sustainable and fairly traded cocoa in Germany to exceed 80 percent by 2020.

Who are we?

Improving legal systems through partnerships to protect people in poverty from exploitation and forms of violence. International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global human rights organization working with local governments and authorities to improve legal systems to combat violence against people living in poverty and guarantee their protection. A particular focus is on the abolition of slavery and human trafficking. Globally, IJM works in 42 locations in 26 countries with nearly 1,400 employees.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

For us, sustainability in the cocoa sector is to be understood as the intertwined interaction of environmental protection, respect for human rights and fair payment. In each dimension, there is still enormous need for action. A sustainable sector enables cocoa farming in harmony with the environment, a minimum income for cocoa farmers that covers more than just living costs. Representation and a voice for local actors along the value chain and respect for human rights, especially for vulnerable groups, are also components of sustainability. Children and young people in particular need a perspective in the cocoa sector that protects them from the worst forms of child labor.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

An improvement of the perspective in the cocoa sector is only possible in close cooperation and responsibility of all involved actors. As a civil society organization, we would like to contribute the perspective of local partner organizations and insights from project work, especially on the worst forms of child labor and gender justice. Dialogue and binding orientation towards jointly set goals is promoted and facilitated by the GISCO.

Additionally, we have launched Gute Schokolade, a Fairtrade-certified product that supports our foundation’s work in empowering children and young people while contributing to tree planting.

Why we are members of GISCO:

We want to engage with companies that produce one of our favourite products: chocolate! Together, we can mitigate the climate crisis and make the world more sustainable and fair.

Logo - Rainforest Alliance

Who are we:

Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working in more than 60 countries at the intersection of business, agriculture and forests. The organization aims to create a better future for people and nature by making responsible business the new normal. By bringing farmers, forest communities, companies and consumers together it addresses some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges of today. The organization changes the way the world produces, sources and consumes, with a focus on cocoa, coffee, tea, bananas, forest products and palm oil through its certification program, tailored supply chain services, landscape and community work and advocacy. In 2018, seven million hectares of land are under Rainforest Alliance or UTZ agricultural certification and more than 2 million certified farmers are certified with one of these two standards, which are designed to improve economic, environmental and social sustainability.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

We believe that sustainable cocoa comes from farms where there is no child labour, workers are well-treated, farmers earn a decent livelihood and the environment is respected. That's why the Rainforest Alliance works in every link of the supply chain, training farmers in more sustainable practices, connecting chocolate companies with Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa farms and encouraging consumers to support more sustainable agriculture by purchasing certified products.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

GISCO brings together a multitude of stakeholders with one common goal: to make the cocoa and chocolate products on the German market more sustainable. Logo - Schokoladenmuseum Köln GmbH

Who are we:

The Chocolate Museum is dedicated to the 5000-year history and present of cocoa and chocolate. The glazed production plant shows how chocolate bars, hollow figures and pralines are made. In the chocolate atelier each visitor can compose his or her own chocolate bar and can snack on fresh Lindt chocolate from the well-stocked chocolate fountain. The cultural historical exhibition “Grown Gold – Sweet Temptation” follows cocoa’s route from its role as the food of the gods among the Aztecs of ancient America to the chocolate of our own times. One can encounter real cocoa trees in the tropical greenhouse, and with a bit of luck, they might also bear fruit. The tour ends with a display of “cult chocolates” that are sure to rouse some memories. The museum, as a competence centre for chocolate, is therefore ideal for all those with an interest in cocoa and chocolate and has established itself nationwide as an extracurricular place of learning.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

A sustainable cocoa industry is of key importance to us, especially as we recognise the opportunity it provides for a positive development in the circumstances of people in the cultivating lands. Many visitors come to the museum to learn where cocoa is grown and how chocolate is made. It is important to them that the cultivation of cocoa is not carried under inhuman conditions.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

We think that GISCO is an important instrument in bringing together all of the stakeholders in Germany and in initiating a lively debate. By these means, the area of sustainable cocoa cultivation can be stabilised and expanded in the long term. This can improve the lives of cocoa farmers and their families and contribute to a successful cocoa industry in the long term for all involved.

Who are we:

Solidaridad is an international civil society organisation with more than 45 years of global experience in facilitating the development of socially responsible, ecologically sound, and profitable supply chains. Solidaridad works across 12 supply chains and operates through 10 Regional Expertise Centres on 5 continents. Have a look at our website www.solidaridadnetwork.org.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

The global demand for cocoa is rising. Yet the majority of the world’s cocoa producers are stuck in a cycle of poverty, unable to meet personal needs and global demand. Additionally, crops such as palm oil and rubber, being more economically viable, threaten the security of the future cocoa supply.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

We believe that Germany and its cocoa and chocolate sector can become a driving force in transforming the cocoa sector into a more sustainable one. We would like to support GISCO and its members in this process by sharing our field level experience in rehabilitating and intensifying cocoa farms, shaping a thriving cocoa service sector and tackling issues such as youth, gender, food security and climate.

Logo - Südwind

Who are we:

The vision of the Südwind Institute is a world of economic, social and ecological justice. Our research gears towards fair economic relationship and we develop instruments and options for future action for development and ecclesiastic organisations, politics and business.

Since cocoa and chocolate are important resources in the global market, it is part of our efforts to publish studies about cocoa and create a dialogue about the cocoa sector’s challenges.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

The goal of a sustainable cocoa sector must be to guarantee all participants of the global supply chain a life in human dignity. Because of the current problems all approaches and projects must concentrate on improved livelihood for 5.5 million small farmers who cultivate cocoa.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

The Südwind Institute is convinced that all individuals and organisations involved in the global cocoa supply chain must work together in order to achieve improvements in the cocoa sector. We expect from all participants of the chain, beginning with the cocoa beans treders, the manufacturer, the retail industry, politics, civil society and research facilities to act in concert to improve the livelihood of cocoa farmers.

Logo - TransFair e.V. (Fairtrade Deutschland)

Who are we?

Fairtrade is a strategy in the fight against poverty. Through fairer trading in the cocoa sector (and other sectors), marginalised farmers and their families in Africa, Asia and South America are able to improve their lives. Behind the concept of Fairtrade is Fairtrade International, the roof organization which develops the Fairtrade Standards and supports the cocoa smallholders to fulfil the Fairtrade requirements and stay certified in the long term. Three regional producer networks represent the Fairtrade farmers and workers. 19 national Fairtrade organizations (including Transfair Germany) promote Fairtrade products, license the Fairtrade Mark on products and spread awareness of Fairtrade in consumer countries.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

Fairtrade has a holistic approach to sustainability with a focus on improving long-term economic, environmental, and social conditions. Sustainable production can only be achieved once producers have been able to face their economic, environmental, and social challenges. It is necessary that farmers earn a stable and sufficient income, in order to make further successful investments in the agricultural sector.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

GISCO’s constitution, purpose and aims, as well as the plurality of its members, offer a good platform  to present 20 years of gathering knowledge in standard setting, certification and monitoring and evaluating our work with small producer organizations. Fairtrade believes in bringing about positive change in the cocoa sector for the benefit of producers, through partnering with companies and traders working to meet the Standards and with focused project work and training.

Logo - WWF

Who we are:

WWF Germany is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan foundation under civil law with legal capacity, based in Berlin. The organization was founded in 1963 and officially registered as a "Foundation for the Protection and Development of the Natural Environment" on March 23, 1973. WWF Germany is part of the WWF network consisting of national organizations and program offices operating in over 100 countries. In accordance with the responsibility of all peoples for the protection of nature and the environment as an economic, social, scientific and cultural task proclaimed by the United Nations, WWF Germany has set itself the goal of promoting nature and environmental protection, science, education and training in the field of nature and the environment.

What sustainability in the cocoa sector means to us:

For us, sustainability in the cocoa sector means that both cultivation and the supply chain comply with social and ecological criteria and standards. Important aspects are that cultivation does not take place at the expense of valuable ecosystems and is carried out in a productive and at the same time sustainable form of agriculture. Diversity in cultivation in combination with resource-conserving cultivation methods are essential to sustainably increase yields and to maintain and promote soil fertility. At the same time, farming systems should be resilient to external factors such as the climate crisis, and the supply chain should guarantee fair prices for farmers. An important factor in improving the livelihoods of rural people is to promote quality and local value addition.

Why we are a member of GISCO:

Our aim is to protect valuable ecosystems. As the cultivation of cocoa and the increasing global demand is not without impact on the environment and partly contributes to the clearing of tropical rainforests, we advocate for a more sustainable way of cocoa cultivation and the supply chain in order to improve transparency, traceability and living conditions in the growing countries and to prevent further deforestation. A transformation can only succeed together with all stakeholders from the global supply chain involved. We therefore consider the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa to be an important platform for exchange.

Logo - ZNU

Who we are:
Making sustainability more accessible and measurable – Dr Axel Kölle and Dr Christian Geßner have been pursuing this goal since the founding of the Centre for Sustainable Leadership (ZNU). Meanwhile, 15 employees work for the application-oriented research institute within the Faculty of Business and Society at Witten/Herdecke University. The ZNU is characterised by a comprehensive sustainability network, which currently has over 100 members – including well-known medium-sized food manufacturers, logistics and service companies, but also scientific institutions and foundations as well as trade journals. With the ZNU Standard for Sustainable Management, the ZNU has developed the first holistic management system around the topic of sustainability that can be independently certified. The ZNU standard is now used at numerous locations in the economy.

What sustainability in the cocoa sector means to us:
The ZNU is committed to a holistic approach to sustainability, so work must be done to ensure that all those involved in the marketing and processing of cocoa work together to achieve a more sustainable economy – and this along the entire value chain, in particular to improve working and living conditions and environmental impacts in the countries of origin and to generate value for all.

Why we are a member of GISCO:
As a renowned partner network, the ZNU contributes to a more sustainable way of doing business due to its practice-oriented research, further education around the topic of sustainability, the annual ZNU Future Conference and through working groups within the ZNU partner network. We promote networking, as well as the exchange of experiences and support companies in their sustainability challenges, especially for companies in the food sector. As a member of GISCO, we would like to participate from its competences on the one hand and on the other hand also contribute our comprehensive sustainability know-how on different Levels.

Logo - Alisos

Who are we?

Alisos is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 that is committed to transforming current development models to ensure a sustainable present and future. Alisos recognizes that the transformations required can only be achieved if all sectors play an active role. Through dialogues with communities, private sector, government, NGOs and donors, agenda setting strategies and capacity building Alisos promotes sustainable and regenerative landscapes.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

In the wake of the historical Colombian Peace Agreement, cocoa becomes a key value chain with the potential to guarantee sustainable production options. Cocoa is not a motor of deforestation in Colombia and it must be ensured that it remains so. In 2018, Colombia becomes the first Latin American country to sign a Cocoa and Forest Initiative. Alisos is currently the Technical Secretariat of the Cocoa, Forest & Peace Initiative (CB&P – Iniciativa Cacao, Bosques & Paz), a public-private initiative aiming to promote deforestation-free cocoa production models that protect and restore forests in the cocoa supply chain, improve livelihoods for producers and help consolidate the peace process in Colombia. In complete alignment with Alisos' work, together we promote regenerative landscapes as a road towards sustainability and peace.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

Similarly to GISCO, the Colombian Cocoa, Forest & Peace (CB&P) Initiative brings together cocoa value chain actors including government, private sector, NGOs and producers with the aim of promoting socially and environmentally responsible cocoa. As the Technical Secretariat and a member of CB&P, Alisos wants to share insights from Colombia and ensure lessons learned are communicated both ways. A truly sustainable cocoa sector requires international collaboration.

- Fertile and healthy soils
- Dynamic agroforestry and thus more biodiversity, higher yields, diversification and income security.

Why we are a member of GISCO

Because improvements in the cocoa sector are only possible together – joining forces, learning from examples and using synergies brings gains at all levels.

Logo - Elucid

Who we are:
Elucid is an impact tech company that advances human rights in global supply chains by building technology to assess and mitigate risks to human health and livelihoods. We provide farming communities with comprehensive health coverage using a context-adapted, scalable, cloud-based solution that does not require continuous mobile network or smartphone ownership. Companies get compelling data on their impact for sustainability reporting and effective risk management. The solution creates a robust supply chain that promotes farmer engagement and subsequently improves farmer retention rates. Our technology has been tried and tested in Ghana, Madagascar, and Uganda, with currently more than 360.000 registered users, 250 participating hospitals, and more than 100.000 claims.

What sustainability in the cocoa sector means to us:
Ensuring access to healthcare demonstrates a shared value opportunity that has far-reaching impact beyond increasing the health of cocoa-growing communities. By implementing social health protection schemes, companies tackle the root cause of many sustainability challenges such as poverty, child labor, deforestation, and gender inequality - contributing to a more robust and thriving cocoa supply chain. This not only increase the health & livelihoods of farming communities but also strengthens responsible business practices that have long-term impact at community level.

Why we are a member of GISCO:
We believe it is key to continuously expand our knowledge, exchange ideas with and learn from one another to create a supply chain that benefits human health and the planet. Together with members of GISCO, Elucid aims to implement pioneering multi-stakeholder projects that have measurable long-term impact and create a truly healthy and robust cocoa supply chain.  Insights and learnings from other projects will ensure higher product-context fit and will help to increase the impact of innovative projects in the future.

Logo - International Cocoa Initiative (ICI)

Who are we?

ICI is a Swiss-based, non-profit foundation that works to ensure a better future for children in cocoa-growing communities. We are a multi-stakeholder initiative working to tackle child labour and forced labour in the cocoa sector, by uniting the forces of the cocoa and chocolate industry, civil society, farming communities, governments, international organizations and donors. Together with our partners, we innovate, catalyse and support the development, implementation and scale-up of effective policies and practices that promote child rights and that prevent or remediate child labour and forced labour.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us?

Our vision is of thriving cocoa-growing communities within a dignified, sustainable and responsibly managed cocoa supply chain, where child rights and human rights are protected and respected, and where child labour and forced labour have been eliminated.

Why are we a member of GISCO?

We believe joining GISCO will help us to engage with key stakeholders in Germany, including German cocoa and chocolate companies, in addition to key government and civil society stakeholders. This will help us to advance the learning and technical advocacy objectives defined in our new strategy, whilst also strengthening alignment in the sector by building a critical bridge between national and international sustainability platforms. We are particularly looking forward to exchanging with other GISCO members on good practice in the sustainability working group which discusses issues related to child labour among others, the human rights due diligence working group, in addition to the international working group on traceability and monitoring.

Who are we:
The Ministry is responsible for development cooperation, sustainable development and global learning, and works in numerous contexts with the food industry in the country. Many companies based in the country produce products with cocoa content.

What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:
Fair wages, environmentally friendly cultivation, transparent supply chains: cocoa cultivation must provide small farmers and their families with a living wage, for example, to put an end to exploitative child labor. This requires fair trade along the supply chain. Cultivation methods must be such that good quality is produced without polluting soil and water.

Why are we a member of GISCO:
With its membership, the Ministry wants to set an example in the country for responsible action in the food industry. The membership can develop charisma in the country and thus make the goals of the association known and promote them positively.

Logo - Moog Impact Economy Consulting

Logo - Nadar

Who we are:

Nadar is a remote sensing company enabling better forest monitoring worldwide through satellite-powered insights. Our applications lie in the monitoring and verification of forest carbon offset projects as well as our latest product: an all-in-one software for compliance with the new EU deforestation regulation. We support companies in the cocoa sector by mapping their farms, monitoring deforestation, and reporting to authorities.

What sustainability in the cocoa sector means to us:

In our opinion, real sustainability in the cocoa sector can only be achieved by reconciling human and environmental rights. Farmers must be able to earn a living income from cocoa cultivation. At the same time, the link between agricuture and deforestation must be cut, for example by practicing more sustainable cultivation through agroforestry systems and bringing more transperancy and traceability into the sector.

Why we are a member of GISCO:

We believe in GISCO's multi-stakeholder focus and applied approach, which actively promotes and advances projects such as PRO-PLANTEURS. Transparency is the first step to eliminating abuses in the cocoa sector. We wish to improve traceability and reduce deforestation with our satellite-powered software for more sustainable cocoa.

We at Nexsus believe that true sustainability can only be achieved by aligning interests of all stakeholders. As a company our mission is to build and leverage strategic partnerships in order to (i) promote sustainable business practices, (ii) ensure traceability, (iii) enhance long-term, positive socio-economic conditions and (iv) minimize conventional environmental impacts from farming.  All these transformations and merits will ultimately empower cocoa producers and cocoa producing communities. Why we are a member of GISCO:

We realize that change can only be accomplished through collaboration of all stakeholders which is why we want to get involved in the Kakaoforum to contribute what we can to make the cocoa industry more sustainable together with the other stakeholders in the sector. We also believe in best practice and hope to benefit from the experience of other projects for our practical work in Ecuador with the goal to adapt and implement what has worked well for others. We also want to better understand where the journey of sustainability in the cocoa sector is going in Germany and in Europe in order to pro-actively take measures and steps as a company in the areas we operate in before they become mandatory.

Logo - Seedtrace GmbH

Who are we:

Many companies - from farms to global corporations - lack the tools to monitor important social and environmental criteria and prove the history of their products. To make this capability accessible to a wide range of companies, a technical and scalable solution is needed. That's why we founded Seedtrace. For us, transparency is the key to fair production and consumption, where social and environmental conditions play a central role.

Our platform helps companies define and integrate relevant data points, to manage and prove social and environmental impact claims and comply with relevant regulations, for example the deforestation regulation. On all levels selected data can be communicated to partners, investors as well as consumers, all the way to the POS. Seedtrace dashboards range from an overview of all price premiums paid to community projects per cooperative, to living income comparisons to transparent mobile payment tracking.

By making product transparency a unique selling point, it becomes economically attractive. We believe that all actors along the supply chain can and should benefit from their work. Together with our partner KOA, we are already setting new standards in the cocoa industry by verifying and irrevocably storing payment data for farmers on a blockchain. What does sustainability in the cocoa sector mean to us:

Our goal is to shift conscious and fair consumption from being the exception to becoming the norm. We aspire to a future where every product can be traced back to its origin. We aim for a future where all the people who produce the products we consume benefit from their work. We strive for a future where respectful treatment of our planet and all living beings is a given. Sustainability in the cocoa sector means providing a livelihood for households and aligning processes with the needs of nature and the requirements for biodiversity in cocoa-growing countries. Sustainability in the cocoa sector means a radical transformation of existing conditions and processes along supply chains. Sustainability means sustainably changing consumer behavior.

Why are we a member of GISCO:

What possibilities exist to achieve the set goals? What does "transparency and sustainability" mean for other market participants in the cocoa industry? What are the concerns, what challenges still need solutions to be developed? In our experience, it takes strong partnerships, honest exchange, and a deep understanding of the static and dynamic market conditions to embed transparency into supply chains as an ongoing process. Which companies are willing to go beyond the deforestation regulation, LkSG, European Supply Chain Directive, and other existing legislations to contribute to the industry's development? And who faces challenges for which we either already have a solution or can develop together through dialogue? We are always interested in implementing joint projects with suppliers, producers, and retailers to collectively achieve the desired supply chain transparency.

Who are we:

The Landbanking Group is an eco-fintech based in Munich, founded in 2022 with the aim of enabling a nature-compatible economy. We do this by fundamentally changing the way nature is recognized - from a seemingly unlimited resource to critical infrastructure for businesses, economies, and societies.

Landler.io is our first solution: a unique platform for natural capital investment and management, enabling land managers to generate income from emerging natural capital (land, water, carbon, and biodiversity) and invest in balance sheet-effective natural capital contracts ("Nature Equity"). The 40-person Landbanking team is committed to creating the toughest currency for nature by combining the latest scientific insights and accounting practices into a coherent, transparent, and legally compliant method for investing in natural capital.

What sustainability in the cocoa sector means to us:

To achieve long-term positive impacts, both ecological, social, and economic aspects in the cocoa sector need to be considered and stabilized. Every producing local community should be fairly rewarded and motivated for their econmoic and ecological performance, applying practices that do not exploit but rather strengthen and promote the ecosystems underlying production in the long term.

Why we are a member of GISCO:

GISCO aims to promote sustainable cocoa production and regenerative practices. They are engaged as a multi-stakeholder association with producers, traders, local communities, and other groups. Our approach to enabling investments in natural capital is end-to-end through our platform Landler.io. This eliminates a multi-tired, broker-distorted natural capital value chain, allowing financial flows o reach producers and cocoa farmers on the ground unrestricted. The impact on the ground is thus maximized. Our approach contributes to strengthening the Living income of local smallholder farmers (through Nature Equity) (GISCO Goal: 1) as well as stabilizing product quality in times of climate change (incentivizing regenerative practices) (Goals: 2,3,4). Furthermore, we advocate for deforestation-free supply chains (Goal 5): Recently, we added a deforestation indicator to our dashboard, measuring deforestation-free status at plot level (min. 30x30m), e.g., for EU due diligence. Specifically, we look forward to engaging in collaborative exchanges with all stakeholder groups affiliated with GISCO to enable and promote the targeted building of natural capital.
