Share of cocoa certified according to sustainability standards among GISCO's members rises to 84 per cent

According to the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI), the share of cocoa certified according to sustainability standards, or equivalently independently verified cocoa, in confectionery sold by GISCO's members has increased again this year.

In 2020, the share amounted to 83% (77% in the overall German market) and increased to more than 84% in 2021 (79% in the overall German market).

Of the total 84%, 38% are attributable to UTZ certification, 19% to Fairtrade, 16% to Rainforest Alliance and 27% to other certification and company programs. Thus, the share of cocoa certified according to sustainability standards or equivalently independently verified in the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa (GISCO) and for the confectionery sold on the entire German market. GISCO has therefore nearly reached its goal for 2025 that a proportion of at least 85% of the cocoa in the cocoa-containing end products sold by the producing members in Germany is certified according to sustainability standards or equivalently independently verified (see goal number 11).
