Share of sustainably certified cocoa among GISCO's members rises to 83 per cent

As the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI) reports, the proportion of cocoa certified according to sustainability standards or independently verified in an equivalent manner in the confectionery sold by GISCO's members has increased again this year.

While the share was 74% in 2019 (72% in the overall German market), it climbs to around 83% in 2020 (77% in the overall German market).

Of the total 83%, 52% is accounted for by UTZ certification, 21% by Fairtrade, 8% by Rainforest Alliance and 19% by other certification and company programmes. Both for the members of the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa (GISCO) and for the confectionery sold on the entire German market, this shows a continuous positive trend for the share of cocoa certified according to sustainability standards since 2011.

GISCO is thus coming close to the goal that by 2025 a share of at least 85% of the cocoa in the cocoa-containing end products sold by the producing members in Germany has been certified according to sustainability standards or has been independently verified in an equivalent manner (see goal number 11).
