The German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa
GISCO, the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa, was launched in June 2012 with the declared aim of improving the situation of cocoa farmers in the countries of origin and promoting sustainable cocoa production.
GISCO is an alliance of the German Federal Government, the German cocoa, chocolate and confectionery industry and retail grocery trade, NGOs and standard-setting organisations (Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ Certified). They wish to channel their activities in order to increase their impact. Beside economic aspects and environmental matters, the prime objective is to improve the lives of cocoa farming families. A further aim is to increase the proportion of cocoa produced according to sustainability standards – not least to ensure that the sector can continue to meet our growing demand in the future. All of these goals are addressed in close cooperation with cocoa-producing countries.
Membership profile of GISCO
We are a multi-stakeholder initiative with about 70 members coming from industry, trade, politics and civil society.
